Food Security In The Form Of Food Tunnels
Green Communities supports the alleviation of poverty in our communities through the establishment of food tunnel programmes. To date, we have successfully implemented these programmes at the following projects/sites:
- Statice Heights, Kewtown
- Witsands, Atlantis
- Wesbank, Delft
- Blue Downs
- Samora Machel, Philippi
One of the larger food tunnel projects currently being implemented is the erection
of ten (10) food tunnels at ten (10) schools within Wesbank and Delft. A City of
Cape Town, Environmental Resource Management Department-endorsed project,
the erection of these tunnels will supplement each school's feeding scheme. Ward
Councillor, Frank Martin played an integral aspect in initiating this project.
The
schools will be responsible for ensuring that surplus produce is either distributed to
NGO's, NPO's, CBO's, FBO's, churches or clinics within the area, or alternatively,
surplus produce could be sold to assist the school in securing funds for re-planting of
seedlings after an 18 month period.
Sufficient training is provided to those who will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the food tunnels, and Green Communities continues to serve in a monitoring and evaluation capacity for one year after the establishment of the food tunnel programme.
In conjunction with the Food Tunnel Programme at these schools, Green
Communities seeks to assist the process of climate change mitigation through
the establishment of a rainwater harvesting system to supplement the food
tunnel management, as well as greening methodologies, smart living and smart
eating training to assist the schools and surrounding communities in addressing
environmental and health impacts.
We have found that the food tunnel programme is a wonderful mechanism for not
only addressing the food security issues that our communities face, however it also
assists in sustainable livelihood formation through healthy eating, skills development,
job creation and social development through participative project management and
community involvement.
